SANTA ANA, Calif. – The shelter opened yesterday by the American Red Cross of Orange County at El Modena High School is scheduled to close, however the chapter will continue to offer service to canyon evacuees. Residents of the Santiago Fire burn areas who need assistance are urged to call the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross at (714) 481-5300. “El Modena has been a very generous host and partner,” said Michael Lee, the Red Cross job director for this incident. “Because the shelter’s only population was Red Cross volunteers, we feel that offering our services on an individual basis is a more effective use of both our resources and the high school.” The Red Cross is urging all Orange County residents to view this incident as a reminder to take three steps to Be Red Cross Ready for any emergency. 1) Get a disaster supplies kit with at least three days of food and water for each family member (including pets), flashlight, battery operated radio and important documents. 2) Make an emergency plan that includes where to meet following a disaster and the phone number for an out-of-state contact 3) Be informed about the potential dangers in the area and know how local authorities will notify the community To download free disaster preparedness information, including at-a-glance safety tips, please visit the Chapter’s website at www.oc-redcross.org. |
