Red Cross Offers Flu Safety Tips

Contact: Daphne Hart – (714) 481-5375

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The recent news regarding Swine Flu may be causing concern for some Orange County residents. The American Red Cross, which plays an important role in providing the public with reliable preparedness information, recommends taking the following steps to help protect yourself and your family from the flu:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid or minimize contact with sick people (a minimum three feet distancing is recommended).
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with tissues when you cough and sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow.
  • Stay away from others as much as possible when you are sick.

These tips and many more can be found in an easy-to-use Flu Checklist located at www.oc-redcross.org. The Flu Checklist also provides information on recognizing common flu symptoms and offers tips for keeping yourself healthy when someone in your household is sick.

Up-to-the-minute updates on the Swine Flu can be found at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site. People seeking information on human swine flu should visit the CDC web site or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.
