Water SafetyWhen Swimming… Use the buddy system. Never swim alone! Know your swimming limitations and stay within them. Don’t try to keep up with stronger swimmers. Learn the correct way to dive. Dive in FEET first. Beware of the “Dangerous Too’s” – too tired, too far from safety, too much sun and too much activity. Swim in supervised areas only.Around Pools and Spas… Assign a responsible adult to stay poolside and closely watch children in the water. Never leave them unattended, even if a lifeguard is on duty. If you must leave even for a few seconds, take the children with you. Do not let children under age five use a spa; extreme heat could be fatal. Learn how to perform CPR. Call the Red Cross for course information. Keep a cordless or cellular phone by the pool to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency. Properly fence and secure your pool. The Red Cross recommends full 360-degree fencing and a self-locking gate with a latch at least 54” high. At the Beach… Check the surf conditions before you enter the water. Obey posted signs such as, NO DIVING, NO SURF ZONE, or CLOSED BEACH. If caught in a current, don’t try to swim against it; swim parallel and gradually angle towards shore. When in the water stay away from piers, pilings and diving platforms. Make sure you always have enough energy to swim back to shore. To help the community protect themselves from water hazards, the Orange County Red Cross has developed Water Safety Tip Cards that include the tips listed here and more water safety rules.
